Trouble saving Office documents in Windows XP/2000?

Microsoft issued a security update in April 2006, MS06-015 (908531), that conflicts with many models of HP scanners, cameras and printers. Side-effects are severe, including program freezes, an inability to follow a link you type into Internet Explorer, inability to open or save files in Office applications, inability to click the + sign while browsing My Documents or My Pictures.

There is probably a patch available, but for those people who have not or cannot patch their system, you will have to roll up your sleeves and carry out the necesarry repairs to the registry yourself.

The solution is to be found 3/4 down the following page, underneath all the manufacturers’ links:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Applications/MS_Office/Q_21820101.html

Remember to reboot your computer afterwards to activate the changes.

Important: This problem is caused by Microsoft’s Window Update. The solution supplied above is supplied as is without any warranty of any kind. If you do not feel confident to make this change yourself then please get an IT-qualified person to do it for you.

Customers within the Essex catchment area may request an engineer to effect the change for them using our Remote Support Service but please note that this is chargeable.
